Incorporation

I have found the following in the March 30, 1892 Weekly Age-Herald under "Local News" (p. 4, col. 3):

Mr. Theodore Smith has incorporated the town of Rosedale, in Shades Valley, just over the mountain, from the head of Twentieth Street. Quite a number of people are living in that flourishing village.

Because the statement mentions Smith and not any government body, I don't think it refers to a government incorporation but rather a business one. Otherwise this would contradict the year of incorporation in Summe's Homewood: The Life of a City, which was 1897. --Lkseitz 08:01, 28 March 2014 (PDT)

  • Interesting. I'm not familiar with how that works. The next place to look is the "Acts of Alabama" to see what, if anything, was incorporated that March. --Dystopos 08:11, 28 March 2014 (PDT)
    • Upon review, Summe appears to have gotten her information from Marjorie White's The Birmingham District, which may have been based partially on an 1897 Birmingham city directory. Is BPL missing any directories from the 1890s? Anyway, I simply meant the wording might be referring to a land company incorporation, even though it doesn't sound like it. Sadly, the Weekly Age-Herald of 1892 seems woefully light on local news. Perhaps most of it saw print in the daily edition. --Lkseitz 23:24, 28 March 2014 (PDT)
