Mythological note

  • The 2nd century "Temple of Hercules Victor" which had been mistaken for a Temple of Vesta marked the location where Hercules bested the giant Cacus, who had stolen some of Geryon's cattle from Hercules and hidden them behind a massive boulder in his cave on the Aventine Hill. Cacus was the son of Vulcan. Interestingly, Birmingham hardware dealer George Kelley used an illustration of Hercules breaking into Cacus' lair to advertise his line of mining equipment in Dubose, John Witherspoon (1885) The Mineral Wealth of Alabama and Birmingham Illustrated.
