United Cement, Lime & Gypsum Workers District Council No. 5
The United Cement, Lime & Gypsum Workers District Council No. 5 was a regional district council for the United Cement, Lime & Gypsum Workers International Union (UCL&GW). It was initially founded in 1936 when six local lodges of the newly-established labor union met in Birmingham to form a Southeastern Conference Board.
That effort faltered until after the 1938 United Cement, Lime & Gypsum Workers International Union National Council Convention was held in the city. The new Southeastern District Council was chartered in March 1939 with Felix Jones as president and full-time representative. The Council kept offices in the Lyric Building in downtown Birmingham.
By 1956 the District Council represented 5,960 workers in 34 locals in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Louisiana, Missippi, north Carolina and South Carolina.
On March 15, 1984 the UCLG&AW national union merged with the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Iron Ship Builders, Blacksmiths, Forgers & Helpers as its Cement, Lime, Gypsum, & Allied Workers (CLGAW) Division. The Southeast District 3 Lodge of the IBBISB/BF&H was chartered on February 1, 2013.
