'''Andrew Johnston Hawkins''' (born [[November 27]], [[1886]] in [[North Birmingham]]; died [[December 26]], [[1979]]) was [[Birmingham]]'s city engineer from [[1921]] to [[1934]] and later served as director of the [[Alabama State Planning Commission]].

Hawkins was a grandson of [[T. F. Cheek]], and was born on his farm in North Birmingham. As city engineer, he oversaw completion of the [[24th Street Viaduct]] and mapped the city's [[segregation|segregated zoning]] for a [[1933]] [[:File:1935 housing map.jpg|"residential security" map]] submitted to the Federal Home Loan Bank Board's Home Owners' Loan Corporation.

Hawkins died in [[1980]] and was survived by his wife, [[Bessie Hawkins|Bessie]] and son, [[A. J. Hakwins Jr|A. J. Jr]]. He was a long-time member of [[First Baptist Church of Birmingham]], and is buried at [[Oak Hill Cemetery]].
