Cardiff (incorporated in 1900) is a town of 55 people on 0.25 square miles just west of Brookside in northwest Jefferson County. Named after the mining town in Wales, the community grew up around the Cardiff mine, which was operated by Sloss Iron & Steel Company. A post office (35041) was established there in 1890. The ZIP Code still applies but since the Five Mile Creek flood the mail for Cardiff has been delivered through the Brookside Post Office. The town had a volunteer fire department for most of its history, but dismantled it and turned over fire protection duties to Brookside Fire Department after the town could no longer afford it. There was also a police department with one or two officers for a short while, with the city jail rented from a resident.

As of the census of 2010, there were 55 people residing in the town's 30 housing units, for an average household of 1.83 persons. The population density was 219.4/mi², with housing units at an average density of 119.7/mi². The racial makeup of the town was 94.6% White and 5.5% African American.

The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.85.

In the town the population was spread out with 22.0% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 32.9% from 25 to 44, 18.3% from 45 to 64, and 18.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 86.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $34,107, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $28,906 versus $18,125 for females. The per capita income for the town was $16,067. There were 5.6% of families and 8.1% of the population living below the poverty line, including no under eighteens and none of those over 64.

The Jefferson County Board of Equalization evaluated 25 homes in Cardiff and determined that their average market value for 2007 was $35,184, a 3.3% increase since 2006.
