The '''Encyclopedia of Alabama''' is an online encyclopedic resource backed by the [[Alabama Humanities Foundation]] and hosted at [[Auburn University]]. It was launched in September [[2008]] with an initial scope of 525 articles, many of which were compiled by scholars expert on specific subjects. As of January [[2012]] the encyclopedia has 1,284 articles on a wide variety of subjects pertaining to [[Alabama]].

[[Jeff Jakeman]] initiated planning for the project in [[2002]] and served as its first managing editor. Historian [[Wayne Flynt]] served as the Encyclopedia's first editor-in-chief. The current managing editor is [[Pat Kaetz]]. The Encyclopedia of Alabama has five full-time staff members and an annual budget of $300,000. Special features of the encyclopedia include multimedia content and teacher-specific resources. It has been praised as among the "Best of Free Reference" by ''Library Journal'' and the "Best State Website" for [[2010]] by ''Family Tree'' magazine.

The site was developed and designed by Merrill-Hall New Media of Atlanta, Georgia. All content is copyrighted to the Alabama Humanities Foundation.
