'''Sloss Iron & Steel Company''' is a descendant of the [[Sloss Furnace Company]] which was founded by Colonel [[James Sloss|James Withers Sloss]]. The name was changed to Sloss Iron & Steel Company in [[1885]] when Colonel Sloss retired and sold the company to a group of [[Alabama]] and Virginia investors. It's offices were located at 218 [[21st Street North]] in the 1880s.

The company was reorganized again in [[1902]] as [[Sloss-Sheffield Steel & Iron Company]] when it acquired the assets of [[Sheffield Iron Company]] of [[Sheffield]], Alabama, which included [[blast furnaces]] at Sheffield and [[Florence]], ore fields in [[Franklin County]] and coal properties in [[Walker County]].
