The 1904 Birmingham Base Ball Club (also known as the Birmingham Coal Barons and Birmingham Iron Men) represented Birmingham in the Southern Association in 1904. The club, owned by William McQueen, was managed by Tom O'Brien and Harry "Farmer" Vaughn, in his first year. They played at the 2,000-seat Slag Pile Field.

On the evening of March 23 the team, calling itself the "Iron Men", played an exhibition in Birmingham against the New York Giants, led by pitcher "Iron Man" Joe McGinnity, to raise money for the Vulcan statue being cast for exhibition at the St Louis World's Fair. Sculptor Giuseppe Moretti attended the event, and was reported to have repeatedly yelled something like "Sapristi!" (a mild expletive expressing alarm) during the game. McGinnity, an iron worker by trade, was given permission to pour some of the iron for the statue at the Birmingham Steel & Iron Company's foundry.
