The 1999 Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival was the first of what became an annual series of film festivals in downtown Birmingham. It was held over the course of three days, on Mother's Day weekend, May 7–9, on the 1800 block of 3rd Avenue North.
The opening night feature was Max Burnett's "Possums" about a high school football announcer who kept a team's dreams alive on the radio even after the school canceled the program. The remainder of the program included 45 features, documentaries and short subjects.
Tickets for the inaugural festival were $12 for a 3-day pass, $8 for a Saturday-Sunday pass, and $5 for a 1-day pass.
