The Alabama Arms Manufacturing Company was chartered in 1861 by the Confederate States of America to construct a blast furnace and railroad in the mineral region of Jefferson County. Frank Gilmer and John T. Milner secured the charter and planned to extend the Alabama Central Railroad to their operation. The company never assembled the necessary capital to begin construction, and was re-organized in November 1862 as the Red Mountain Iron & Coal Company, eventually building the Oxmoor Furnace and completing some work toward the completion of a rail line into the district.
