BirminghamWatch is an online news publication published by the non-profit Alabama Initiative for Independent Journalism. The organization, founded in 2014 by Mark Kelly, Carol Nunnelley and Jerome Lanning, focuses on public-service reporting on government and politics to promote informed citizen engagement.

Nunnelley, a former Birmingham News managing editor, was the executive director and editor until her retirement in 2021. Lead news editor Virginia Martin assumed additional duties as the organization conducted a search for a new leader. André Natta was named executive director in January 2024.

The Alabama Initiative for Independent Journalism is supported by the Los Angeles, California-based Institute for Nonprofit News and the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham, and its "Media Savvy" public forum programs have been supported by the Alabama Humanities Foundation.

In October 2024 the publication was awarded a 2-year, $100,000 grant for general operating support from the Press Forward coalition.
