The Alabaster Fire and Rescue Service is responsible to responding to fires and other emergencies in and around Alabaster. As of 2009, the department consisted of 57 full-time personnel, including 34 Paramedics, working from three stations, with a minimum of four personnel per apparatus.

History

Originally known as the Alabaster Fire Department, the group began as a volunteer unit. In 1974, the city hired its first paid firefighter, John Cochran, who served as Fire Chief, building up the city department from the volunteer unit, until his retirement on October 31, 2003.

Chief Frank Matherson served as interim chief until being named to the post permanently in January 2004. He retired on November 1, 2012. During his tenure 15 more full-time firefighters were added to the department, as well as a full-time Fire Inspector, Fire Marshal, and a Public Education Officer.
