Askhari Johnson Hodari

Askhari Johnson Hodari is a former assistant professor of African-American Studies at UAB and co-author of The African Book of Names and Lifelines: The Black Book of Proverbs.

Hodari has a bachelor's degree from Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia and completed a Ph.D. in Psychology from Howard University in Washington, D.C. in 1999. She has worked as a journalist, researcher and instructor in Black History topics. Her lifelong interest in African names resulted in her first book, compiled with Jamaican writing partner Yvonne McCalla Sobers.

Hodari moved to Birmingham from Maryland in 2001, following instruction from a dream. She and Sobers began compiling their book of proverbs in 2007 and saw it published in 2010.
