Bair's Ski Shop
Bair's Ski Shop was a sporting good store specializing in the sale and rental snow skiing equipment. The shop also carried outdoor clothing, sunglasses, tennis gear and other goods.
The business was founded by Liz and John Bair in Atlanta, Georgia's Buckhead neighborhood in 1967 and expanded to Athens, Georgia. Jimbo Moore opened a third shop at 2812 Cahaba Road in Mountain Brook Village in 1977, bringing on Chip Bair as manager. In 1978 the chain was awarded "Eastern Ski Retailer of the Year" by Ski Industries of America.
Liz and John sold their Georgia stores and retired in 1986. The Birmingham store celebrated a grand opening for a new location at 1920 29th Avenue South in Homewood on October 9, 1993. In 1995 the business rebranded as Bair's Ski and Patio, adding outdoor furniture and other lines.
The shop closed in January 2000. Chuck Turner, of rival Ski N' Stuff in Vestavia Hills, acquired its ski inventory, and also hired long-time hard goods manager Mark Millican.
