William Scott (born 1964 in Birmingham) is Chief of the San Francisco Police Department in San Francisco, California.

Scott grew up in Alabama and studied accounting at the University of Alabama. He married in 1987 and has three children.

In 1989 a cousin encouraged Scott to switch to a career in law enforcement. He joined the Los Angeles Police Department that year, and was serving there during the 1992 Rodney King rioting. Over the next 27 years he rose through the ranks to commander of the South Bureau in 2012 and eventually to deputy chief. While there he completed the Senior Management Institute of Policing program conducted by the Police Executive Research Forum.

In December 2016 Scott was named to succeed Greg Suhr as the 43rd chief of the San Francisco Police Department by mayor Ed Lee. Suhr had resigned in the wake of a fatal police shooting of a Black woman the previous May. Scott was sworn in on January 23, 2017.
