Birmingham Human Rights Commission

The Birmingham Human Rights Commission is an investigative panel created by the City of Birmingham under its Birmingham human rights ordinance, as amended in December 2018. The commission investigates alleged violations of the ordinance, which prohibits city contractors from employing discriminatory hiring practices. Cases that can not be resolved through negotiation with the commission would be tried in the Birmingham Municipal Court.

The commission has 15 members; nine appointed by the Birmingham City Council (one from each District), and six appointed by the Mayor (three from non-profits and three from the business community. The city expects the group to be empaneled by January 1, 2019.
