Brenda Spahn
Brenda Lovelady Spahn (born c. 1949; died December 18, 2024) was the founder and executive director of the Lovelady Center.
Spahn had a career as operator of a chain of tax preparers and Excell Mortgage. In 2004 she was was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service and accused of filing false returns for four clients. She pleaded guilty to one count and sold her tax business.
Having reckoned with the prospect of serving prison time, Spahn was moved to support women re-entering society by inviting 7 former inmates from the Tutwiler Prison for Women into her home. Within a year she acquired and renovated the former East End Hospital in East Lake as a rehabilitation center for women and their children. The Lovelady Center grew into a large organization which has supported more than 20,000 individuals.
Spahn's daughter, Melinda MeGahee, took over the role of CEO of Lovelady Center in 2021.
