The Bush Hills sinkhole was a 30-foot deep and 80-foot wide sinkhole which first appeared on January 25, 2008 along 8th Avenue West near 16th Street West in the Bush Hills neighborhood in western Birmingham. Two homes had to be demolished due to the hole, which was believed to have been caused by the drought during the previous year. Don Lupo of the mayor's Office of Citizens Assistance, stated that filling the hole would take 6 weeks and cost the city nearly $1 million.
