The Daughters of United Charity was founded in January of 1884 at a meeting of citizens at the First Methodist Episcopal Church, South. The ultimate goal of the nonsectarian club was the erection of a charity hospital.

Hospital of United Charity

The Hospital of United Charity was incorporated on March 9, 1887 and overseen by the "Board of Lady Managers". The hospital opened on October 23, 1888 with 28 beds in rented space in the Hughes Building. A 100 bed building was constructed for the hospital in 1890. The building burned in 1894.
