The David Walker Lupton African American Cookbook Collection is one of the world's largest collections of cookbooks written by or for African-Americans. It was bequeathed to the W. S. Hoole Special Collections Library at the University of Alabama in 2004 after Lupton's death. A noted researcher in African American history, Lupton was a cousin of former University president Nathaniel Lupton.

The collection contains 450 works spanning from 1827 to 2000 and was assembled as part of Lupton's research toward drafting a bibliography of such works, currently in the process of being published. Many of the early works focus on recipes used by black servants in institutional or estate kitchens. Some later works relate favorite recipes of African-American celebrities like Muhammad Ali and Mahalia Jackson. A number of works were small private publications distributed locally as fund-raisers for churches and schools.
