Eastside Gardens was a large farmstead operated by William Dobbins on land "out past Sloss Furnace" which he purchased in 1873. Dobbins grew okra, squash, eggplant, radishes, tomatoes, potatoes, cabbage, onions, carrots, parsnips, turnips, peas, cauliflower, lettuce, corn, and sweet potatoes. He also maintained grapevines, fruit trees and any other variety of salable produce. He reckoned in 1885 that his farm could supply the whole city if put to the test.
