One of the stone lions at Legion Field, Graymont Avenue entrance.
According to a Facebook post by Bill Grant his grandfather, also named Bill Grant, a sculptor who migrated from Edinburgh , Scotland. Carved the lions from limestone quarried at East Thomas. The WPA publication Alabama: A Guide to the Deep South (Alabama State Planning Commission, 1941) states that "William Grant, a native of New York but a resident of Birmingham, designed and executed the Alabama War Memorial at the entrance of Birmingham's Legion Field." (p. 145)
According to Nancy Lynette King Shirley, these were carved by her grandfather, William Edward Whalen, who worked for the Reed Brothers Stone Company. [1]
