George Rust residence
The George Rust residence is a 17,074 square-foot 5-bedroom, 9-bath residence at 2965 Briarcliff Road in Mountain Brook. It was designed over many years by mechanical engineer George Rust and constructed in 1966 by the Brice Building Company for about $1.6 million and was, at the time, the largest private residence in Alabama.
Rust and his wife, Helen, occupied the house until 1978. It was purchased in 1987 by Marathon Corporation founder Tom Jernigan, who renovated the house with an expansive landscaped rear yard which includes a swimming pool and 3-hole golf course. The house itself has a cinema, elevator and ornately-carved mahogany millwork.
Jernigan died in 2008 and the house is held by his estate. The property served as the 2011 Decorators ShowHouse.
