Grundhoefer opened the club in 1979, moving to a larger space at 208 23rd Street North a year later. Notable performers at Grundy's included Buddy Rich, Count Basie, Maynard Ferguson, Buddy Guy, Sun Ra, Koko Taylor, Johnny O'Neal, Royce Campbell, Clark Terry and numerous others. The club closed in 1992 when Grundhoefer was diagnosed with cancer. He continued to host jam sessions at Marty's until his death in 1997.
