Hal Lynch
James Harold Tilton "Hal" Lynch (born November 13, 1927 in Birmingham, died October 5, 2006 in Opp) was a stage, film and television actor and writer.
Lynch was born in Birmingham, but grew up in Opp, in Covington County. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy while a student in high school, graduating in absentia while he was in Okinawa in 1945.
In the 1950s he began pursuing an acting career in New York. He took minor roles and had a breakout role in "Spoon River Anthology" which ran from September 1963 to January 1964. Later that year he made his television debut on an episode of "Gunsmoke".
For the next 12 years, Lynch appeared in over 200 television programs, including "Barnaby Jones", "Star Trek", "The Rockford Files", "Big Valley" and "The Mod Squad". He also appeared in more than 20 films.
Lynch also sold a number of scripts for television and wrote the plays "Three Miles to Poley" and "Heroes of Opp", based on the life of his grandfather, Bird Jacobs.
Lynch was a founder and co-owner of Theatre West in Los Angeles before returning to Opp with his son in the mid 1970s. Back in Opp, Lynch became an amateur historian and storyteller, writing a weekly history column for the Opp News and appearing frequently as a storyteller for school groups.
Lynch died of an apparent suicide in 2006 and is buried at Peaceful Acres Cemetery in Opp.
