Hal McIntosh
Hal Winston "Mac" McIntosh (born August 24, 1948 in Fairfield; died August 17, 2020) was a theater teacher at Hewitt-Trussville High School and Clay-Chalkville High School.
Hal was one of three sons born to coal miner and foreman Felix Winston McIntosh and the former Sarah Frances Spinks. He was a lifelong caregiver for his brother, Larry, who was born with congenital hydrocephalus.
During the Vietnam War, McIntosh served as an interior communications electrician in the U.S. Navy with the rank of Petty Officer 3rd Class. He earned his bachelor's degree in theater at the University of Montevallo in 1971, and a master's in education at Auburn University in 1976. In the 1970s and 1980s he worked as a sales associate at Aland's and Parisian.
McIntosh was hired as a theater and social studies teacher at Hewitt-Trussville in 1986. He retired from Jefferson County Schools in 2015. In addition to leading high school theater programs and productions for 30 years, he directed productions for the Birmingham Festival Theatre, Theatre LJCC, and Trussville's ACTA Theater. He also appeared on stage as an actor with Summerfest, Red Mountain Theatre Company, Virginia Samford Theatre, Town and Gown Theatre, UAB Theatre, The Parable Players, Theatre LJCC, ACTA, and Birmingham Festival Theatre.
McIntosh served on the board of Birmingham Festival Theater, and was active with the Alabama Conference of Theatre, serving one term as president. He was a long-time judge for its Walter Trumbauer High School Theatre Festival. The organization presented him with their "Dorothy Schwartz Outstanding Educator Award" in 1994.
McIntosh died in August 2020 from COVID-19, and was buried at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo.
