Hazelrig-Salter Radiation Oncology Center
The Hazelrig-Salter Radiation Oncology Center (originally proposed as the UAB Radiation Oncology Building) is a component of the UAB Heersink School of Medicine's O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center which houses imaging and radiation therapy facilities for the diagnosis and treatment of cancers. When it opened it treated approximately 30,000 patients per year, including pediatric oncology patients at nearby Children's Hospital. It also hosts research conducted by the UAB Department of Radiation Oncology. The new center replaced facilities previously located in the Wallace Tumor Institute.
The $30 million project was supported by significant private donations generated through a "Rays of Hope" campaign. Chip Hazelrig contributed $5 million, in acknowledgment for which UAB agreed to name the facility in honor of his parents, J. William and Virginia Hazelrig who both died from cancer, along with their long-time friends, Paul and Merle Salter. Dr Merle Salter chaired the Department of Radiation Oncology from 1986 to 1995. Gresham Smith & Partners designed the overall building, which was constructed by Brasfield & Gorrie.
A groundbreaking for the center was held on January 9, 2007 and it was dedicated on February 28, 2010. The center occupies a 50,000-square-foot, 2-story portion of the UAB Women & Infants Center on Block 176, at the corner of 18th Street and 6th Avenue South. The Hazelrig-Salter Radiation Oncology Center is equipped with TrueBeam equipment manufactured by Varian Medical Systems of Atlanta, Georgia, offering faster and more precise treatment than earlier technology.
The Limbaugh Family Park of Hope was constructed on the corner of the block outside the center's waiting area as "a place of reflection and renewal" for patients and their families.
