Herman Hinton

Herman L. Hinton is deputy chief of the Investigative Operations Bureau in the Birmingham Police Department.

Hinton graduated from Carver High School and spent three years in the U. S. Navy before taking a job at Alabama By-Products in Tarrant. He studied fire sciences at Jefferson State Community College. He dropped out to enroll in an electronics course, but eventually returned to his childhood ambition to become a police officer and applied to the Birmingham Police Academy.

Hinton was sworn in to the department in 1983 and patrolled in the North Precinct. He was later promoted to detective and worked in burglary, robbery, forensics and homicide. Eventually he was promoted to head the homicide unit, and founded its "Cold Case" program in 2003.

Hinton retired from the department in May 2013.
