Hillside Music & Que
Hillside Music & Que was a casual restaurant and bar with live music located at 633 Montgomery Highway in Vestavia Hills. The 52-seat restaurant also had an 18-seat bar and a patio with six tables.
The business opened in July 2023 as The Palm & Pig, owned by a three-member group led by chef and general manager Doug Smith, a former owner of Smith's Oysters & Steaks in Crestline Park. It originally featured seafood and barbecue on the menu. The bar hosted live music on Thursday through Sunday evenings and a trivia competition on Wednesdays. Bartender Craig Singley moved to the new venture from Saw's Juke Joint.
Smith left after a year. Remaining partners Charles Perry and Skip Davis hired chef J. P. Holland from The Fig and carried out a rebranding beginning in July 3. The menu was expanded with Holland's signature chicken fried chicken, along with more burger options, hot dogs and side dishes.
The owners, both of whom had other full-time jobs, decided to close the business in October 2024. Davis blamed "the current political and economic environment," for making it difficult to succeed as an independent business.
