Janet Simpson
Janet Elizabeth Simpson-Templin (born c. 1977 in Georgia) is a singer-songwriter, musician, educator, writer, magazine editor, non-profit executive and co-owner of Shu Shop. She has written songs for and fronted numerous Birmingham bands, including Delicate Cutters, Teen Getaway, and Timber, and was also a member of Briarwood Virgins and the early music ensemble Highland Consort.
Simpson grew up in Rome, Georgia. She earned a bachelor's degree in piano pedagogy at the University of Montevallo in 2002 while performing frequently at Barnstormer Pizza. After graduating, she began working as the box office manager for the Library Theatre at Hoover Public Library. She left in 2009 to become editor-in-chief of Pavo magazine. When that publication folded in 2010 she was named director of the Art Folk non-profit contemporary art center in the Young & Vann Building. She is currently the director of communications and development for Crisis Center Inc.
Simpson has taught music classes independently and songwriting workshops for Desert Island Supply Co.. She is a section leader for the music department at St Luke’s Episcopal Church, and has written and recorded music for various film and television projects. She released her first solo album, "Safe Distance", in 2021.
