George Jay Gogue (born 1947 in Waycross, Georgia) was the 18th and 20th President of Auburn University, serving from 2007 to 2017 and again from 2019 to 2022.

Gogue's parents operated a plant nursery in Georgia. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at Auburn University in horticulture in 1969 and 1971, and went on to complete a Ph.D. at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan in 1973.

Gogue began his career as a scientist with the National Park Service, where among his other duties he was responsible for stocking the trout pond at Camp David in advance of the peace talks between Anwar Sadat of Egypt and Menachem Begin of Israel in 1978. Gogue also served as a U.S. Army Reserve officer.

In 1986 he was hired as an associate director at Clemson University's Office of University Research. He was promoted to vice-president for research and vice-president/vice-provost for agriculture and natural resources two years later.

In 1995 Gogue was named provost of Utah State University in Logan. In 2000 he accepted the presidency of New Mexico State University in Las Cruces. He left that role in 2003 to serve as chancellor of the University of Houston System and president of the University of Houston.

He returned to his alma mater as president of Auburn University in 2007. U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano appointed Gogue to her Academic Advisory Council in 2012. He retired in 2017. When Auburn and Leath agreed to "part ways" in 2019, Gogue came back as interim president. He was succeeded by Christopher Roberts in 2022.

In 2023 Gogue returned to New Mexico State University as interim chancellor.
