Jim McElwain

James Frank McElwain (born March 1, 1962 in Missoula, Montana) is the head football coach at Central Michigan University. From 2008 to 2011 he was offensive coordinator for the Alabama Crimson Tide football team.

McElwain graduated from Sentinal High School in Missoula and played quarterback at Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Washington, earning a degree in education in 1983. He remained at EWU as a graduate assistant and was promoted to quarterbacks and receivers coach under head coach Dick Zornes. He left to coach at Montana State, and then coached at the University of Louisville and followed his head coach, John L. Smith, to Michigan State University before spending a year as quarterbacks coach for the Oakland Raiders.

In 2007 McElwain became the offensive coordinator for Fresno State University. A year later he was offered the Alabama job by head coach Nick Saban. On December 12, 2011, sources revealed that McElwain had accepted the head coaching position with Colorado State.[8][9][10] A press conference was held at the Colorado State University Rams indoor practice facility on December 13, 2011 to officially announce the hiring. He finished his Alabama career in the 2011 BCS National Championship game.

He served as the head coach at Colorado State from 2012 to 2014, where he was named the Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year in 2014. He was head coach at Florida from 2015 to 2017, wide recievers coach at University of Michigan in 2018, and has been at Central Michigan since 2019.

McElwain and his wife, Karen, have three children.
