Kari Powell

Kari Swenson-Powell (born February 22) was a 2018 Democratic candidate for Alabama Public Service Commission, Place 2, and serves on the Board of Directors for SWEET Alabama.

Powell was raised in Wisconsin. In 2017 she announced her candidacy for Place 2 on the Alabama Public Service Commission as a Democrat. She campaigned statewide alongside Cara McClure, who was running as a Democrat for Place 1 on the Alabama Public Service Commission. Powell ran on a the platform of lower energy bills and cleaner energy, stating "Alabama is one of the most poverty-stricken states in the US, but Alabamians pay the highest monthly energy bills... Our unjust energy regulation system perpetuates (and even creates) poverty in Alabama." In 2019 she began serving on the Board of Directors for SWEET Alabama, a statewide nonpartisan non-profit working to connect communities to resources for energy efficiency, sustainability, and affordable housing.
