Kenya Marshall
Kenya Lavender Marshall (born April 7, 1975 in Birmingham) is an attorney and former candidate for Jefferson County Circuit Court Judge, Place 17 in the 2010 general election.
Marshall, the granddaughter of Simmie Lavender, attended public schools in Birmingham, graduating from Wenonah High School. She earned her bachelor's degree in English and political science at the University of Alabama and her juris doctorate at the Southern University Law Center. She married Marvin Marshall in 1999 and has one son. They live in Gardendale and attend Faith Chapel Christian Center.
Her solo practice, the Marshall Law Firm, LLC, specializes in personal injury and family law cases.
Marshall won 42% of the primary votes and defeated incumbent appointee Nikki Still in the runoff of the 2010 primary elections. After the runoff, she was accused of spending $30,000 from a client's trust account to cover personal expenses. She was suspended from practice by the Alabama State Bar's disciplinary committee pending a formal hearing, at which she admitted to the charges and was given a four-year suspension. Without a license, she was no longer qualified to serve as a judge, so the Alabama Democratic Party selected Elisabeth French to replace her on the November general election ballot.
