Led Zeppelin was a celebrated English rock band founded in 1968 by Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham. They were the arguably the most popular rock group of the 1970s. They released nine full-length studio albums, of which six spent some time on top of the record charts. Their relentless tours of large venues across North America helped establish the culture of "stadium rock".

The group played twice in the Birmingham District. The first was in Tuscaloosa in June 1973. The second was in May 1977 in Birmingham, following the release of "Presence". The Summer of 1977 marked the band's last major tour.

1973

  • June 5, 1973 at Memorial Coliseum (now Coleman Coliseum) in Tuscaloosa. The show was the fourth stop on the North American tour which followed the release of the album "Houses of the Holy."

1977

  • May 18, 1977 at the BJCC Coliseum (now Legacy Arena). The show was the start of the second leg of the major tour which followed the release of "Presence". General admission tickets sold for $8.50.

Jimmy Page wore his white "matador" suit for the show, while Plant wore blue jeans with a cinched brown shirt worn open.

During the show Dale Richardson tossed his hat onstage. Plant picked it up and put it onto John Paul Jones' head. Photographer Frank Melfi was the only press photographer in the pit for the show, though Dan Griffin captured numerous iconic images from a few rows back.

The band stayed in New Orleans throughout the second leg of the tour, flying to other cities on "The Starship" to perform, and then flying back afterward. Jones' famous triple-neck acoustic, made by Andy Manson, made its debut for this performance of "Ten Years Gone".

The 1977 tour proved to be the band's last major outing.
