  • October 20: Sam Pulline, died at St Vincent's Hospital from a gunshot wound. The shot came from Officer Hawkins of the Birmingham Police Department who was chasing Pulline from the scene of what he and Officer Ivey took to be a fight on 26th Street and 4th Avenue North. Hawkins said he intended to fire a warning shot into the ground, without realizing that Pulline, about 50 feet ahead, had tucked himself up behind a fence rather than running forward. Pulline said they were only playing at the intersection and he didn't know why he was being chased by the officer. The death was investigated by the Jefferson County Coroner. (report)
