This is a List of Birmingham homicides in 1989. It includes homicide cases occuring within the city limits during the calendar year. Note that not all homicides are ultimately ruled to be murder in courts of law.

  • January: Kimberly Hill, an AmSouth Bank worker, was beaten, stabbed and suffocated by her supervisor, Joseph Ward Gentry, with whom she was having an affair and had become pregnant. Gentry was convicted and sentenced to death in 1990, but the conviction was overturned on appeal. The retrial also ended in a death sentence, but it too was overturned in the Alabama Supreme Court. The Court later reversed its decision, but would not allow the death sentence. He has been up for parole and denied twice, in 2001 and 2007.
  • January 3: David Painter, 37, a bartender at Mabel's Beauty Shop & Chainsaw Repair, was shot in the back of the head during a robbery. No arrest.
  • January 4: Maurice Williams, 23, was found dead from a shotgun wound in an alley in the Elyton Village housing project in Graymont.
  • April 15: Samuel Sullivan Jr, 34, was found dead in his home at 112 15th Court North from a gunshot wound to his head.
  • July 8: Cary Allbritton, 21, was shot to death while protecting a female friend during a robbery attempt at his apartment at 2332 10th Court South.
