This is a List of homicides in 1940. Note that a "homicide" refers to the cause of death as determined by a medical examiner, not to the crime of murder as charged by prosecutors and determined by plea or trial.

  1. May 9: O. D. Henderson was shot and beaten to death at the Fairfield Police Station. The death was ruled an "unjustifiable homicide" by the coroner. Officer Thomas Nelson was charged with manslaughter in the first degree, but was found not guilty at trial. (report)
