- August 2: Larry Thomas, 11, was shot to death after having been kidnapped from a playground in Midfield. He was found buried in a shallow grave near Highland Lake in the Strait Mountain community in Blount County. Convicted sex offender Michael Anthony Mayola, 28, who had operated a barber shop in Oneonta under the name "George R. Workman", was charged with murder and arrested at a bus station in Baltimore, Maryland. He confessed and was sentenced to life in prison. Mayola waived his right to a parole hearing in 2003. A hearing was held in January 2021, at which he was denied parole. (report)
