This is a List of homicides in 1977. It includes homicide cases occurring throughout the Birmingham area during the calendar year. Note that not all homicides are ultimately ruled to be murder in courts of law.

Vestavia Hills

  • April 4: Jody Ford, a transgendered salon owner, was shot to death in the parking lot of the Vestavia Motor Lodge following an argument that began outside the Brookwood Village cinema. She followed motel manager Larry Maddox from the scene and continued to assail him verbally. He retrieved a .16 caliber automatic shotgun from the motel office and killed her. He was charged with murder, but claimed self-defense and was found not guilty at trial.

Tuscaloosa County

  • January 10: Lillian Montgomery, 62, was shot to death at her apartment on U.S. Highway 82 south of Tuscaloosa. James Barney Hubbard, who had been released from prison in 1976 after having served 18 years for the 1957 murder of David Dockery, was convicted of capital murder. He was sentenced to death in September of that year, and again at retrial in April 1982. Hubbard was executed by lethal injection on August 5, 2004. (report)
