This is a List of homicides in 1999, including all cases investigated in the Birmingham District.

Bibb County

  • February 25: Desta Dodson Byrd, 29, was found shot to death near her driveway at Brierfield Estates. A .22 rifle was recovered on the scene, but investigators ruled out suicide based on the entry wound's location. Her husband, William Jody Byrd, was arrested and charged with her death in May 2011. He was convicted of murder before Circuit Court Judge Jack Meigs on November 1, 2013. The conviction was upheld in the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals in December 2015. (report)

Coosa County

  • January 12: Bobbi Ingram, 38, and her daughter died from shotgun blasts to the head at their house on U.S. Highway 231, south of Rockford. Her son, Joe Daniel Stallions, was interviewed at the time, but not charged. Further investigation produced enough evidence to charge him with capital murder in August 2020. (report)
  • January 12: Jodi Stallions, 17, was killed in the same incident. Her 8-month-old daughter was found alongside her, unharmed.

Shelby County

  • August 5: Lee Holdbrooks, 32, was shot to death at Ferguson Enterprises in Pelham by delivery driver Alan Eugene Miller, who was convicted and sentenced to death. His execution is scheduled for September 22, 2022. (report)
  • August 5: Christopher Yancy, 28, was also killed by Miller at the same location.
  • August 5: Terry Jarvis, 39, was shot to death by Miller at Post Airgas, a previous employer also in Pelham.

Talladega County

  • February 19: Billy Jack Gaither, 39, was abducted from the The Tavern in Sylacauga and stabbed, beaten and burned to death on the banks of Peckerwood Creek south of Talladega Springs. Gaither was gay and his murder gained national attention as a horrific hate crime. Steven Eric Mullins and Charles Monroe Butler were arrested and charged with murder. Mullins pleaded guilty and Butler was convicted at trial. Both were sentenced to life in prison without parole. (report)
