Magnolia Elementary School is an elementary school for K-5 students in the Trussville City Schools system. It is located at 500 Hidden Way Lane north of the Magnolia Place subdivision in southern Trussville. Phyllis Faust is the principal.
Trussville voters approved a 7-mill increase in local property taxes, earmarked for schools, in February 2014. The proposal to build a new school close to Birmingham's Eastern Area Landfill contributed to controversy over alleged management problems at the facility. Before determining the name of the new school, the board also considered South Trussville Elementary School.
Ground was broken for the new $13.7 million school on April 25, 2015. It was designed by Erin Harlow of MBI Inc. architects of Knoxville, Tennessee to accommodate 500 students. The 69,119 square foot building features generous daylighting and bright colors. The school's media center and adjoining spaces also function as a combined 6,559 square foot storm shelter, large enough to protect the entire student body, faculty and staff. Argo Building Company was the contractor.
Originally planned to open before the 2016-2017 academic year, construction delays forced students to attend classes at Paine Elementary School until October 12.
