Matt Mathews
Matt Mathews (born c. 1992) is a barrel racer, studio photographer, social media influencer, and stand-up comedian.
Matthews grew up in Bessemer and attended McAdory High School. He began working as a photographer at a Walmart portrait studio while attending nursing school. He found a talent for capturing women's beauty and soon specialized in boudoir photographs and built a successful business, originally operating from the farmhouse he and his husband, Rob Killgore share in McCalla. He also competes in rodeos as a professional barrel racer.
In 2020 he opened his own studio, Matt Mathews Boudoir Photogrpahy in the Killian Building at 2308 2nd Avenue North in downtown Birmingham. The ground floor space functioned as boutique, offering lingerie, candles and gifts. He shared outtakes from his work along with inspirations messages on his Instragram account, and built up a brand. During the COVID pandemic he began posting short videos to TikTok, garnering 12 million views for his first post. He gradually developed a popular routine of narrating his farm chores dressed in a bathrobe and muttering "I hate it here". Many posts feature animals from the farm, including his horse, Lucy. He also posted videos of an injured opossum he had rescued and kept, which led to a raid by the Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources in September 2021.
The response to his videos led Mathews to develop a stand-up routine. He took a class with Eunice Elliott, and then booked a successful series of shows at the Comedy Club Stardome in early 2023. The led to a 12-stop national tour titled "When That Thang Get Ta Thang’n." He signed with Creative Artists Agency in May 2024, and taped a comedy special over two nights at the Alabama Theatre in July. He also filmed a series for YouTube called "Doin’ the Most with Matt Mathews," in which he demonstrates all the things he is not an expert at, such as cooking at Yo Mama's, tending bar at Siluria Brewing Company, or dancing with the Alabama Ballet.
In 2025, at the encouragement of Jewel Kilcher, Mathews wrote and recorded nine country songs which he released independently on a self-titled album. He headlined a record release event at WorkPlay on May 15 to benefit the Animal League of Birmingham.
