Mickey Newsome

Mickey Newsome is the executive chairman and former CEO of Hibbett Sporting Goods.

Newsome is a graduate of Woodlawn High School and Samford University. He began working part time at Dixie Sporting Goods in 1958 and then was hired by Ike Hibbett to help him open his second store in Huntsviile in 1965. He was promoted to district manager when Hibbett opened a third location in Birmingham in 1967. Three years later he was made a regional manager, and assumed the presidency of the 13-store chain in 1980.

Newsome was president when the company went public in 1996 with 82 locations, and remained as CEO as the chain grew to over 770 stores and nearly $600 million in annual sales. He has served on the board of directors of the National Sporting Goods Association and its Hall of Fame Committee, as wall as on the advisory board for Samford's Brock School of Business.

Newsome is also a prolific collector of sports memorabilia, which fills display cases and storage rooms at Hibbet's headquarters. He was honored as a "Distinguished Sportsman" with the 2010 class of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame.
