MountainTop Community Church is a 2,000 member congregation founded by Bill Elder in 1992. The current lead pastor is Carter Mcinnis. The church's mission is to reach people who did not currently attend church, employing extensive outreach programs and contemporary-style worship services.
Elder began leading services in homes with as few as 10 people in attendance. In 2001, MountainTop moved into a 34-acre, $11.5 million campus on Centerview Drive off U. S. Highway 31 in Vestavia Hills with a 1,700 seat sanctuary. The master plan was designed by HKW Associates.
Elder suffered a stroke on December 24, 2009 and remained hospitalized until March 11, 2010. He resumed preaching on a limited basis on September 26 of that year.
