Mt Moriah United Methodist Church was founded in 1890 or 1894 as a mission to African Americans in South Woodlawn. It was part of the Central Alabama Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. It was known as Mt Moriah Methodist Episcopal Church until 1939 and as Mt Moriah Methodist Church from 1939 to 1968.

Records suggest that 1890 it moved into a rented building on the corner of 65th Street South and 1st Avenue South. It was pastored by Rev. Oliver Pearson. From at least 1915 to 1920 it was located at 6433 2nd Avenue South.

The congregation later built a church on the corner of 64th Street South. and 1st Avenue South. In 1969 the building was sold to the Humble Oil Company and the congregation moved into the building of the recently disbanded 40th Street Methodist Church at 506 40th Street North in North Avondale. It was rededicated in 1972. The congregation met here through at least 1987. Later it appears to have met at 4801 Powell Avenue South before disbanding.
