North Lake is a small, circular limestone sink lake located in the Tarrant Heights community of Tarrant, adjacent to Birmingham's Brummitt Heights neighborhood between Alabama State Highway 79 and Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport.
The lake is an uncommon geological type for Jefferson County, consisting of a filled limestone sink. It also hosts flora and fauna not found elsewhere in the region, including numerous Tupelo gum trees and the floating plants featherfoil and Ricciocarpus, a type of liverwort.
The lake spills into a small stream that runs north through a ravine to Five Mile Creek.
