Selwyn Vickers

Selwyn Vickers (born c. 1960 in Demopolis, Marengo County) is a physician and president and CEO of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. He was previously dean of the UAB Heersink School of Medicine and CEO of the UAB Health System and the UAB Ascension St Vincent's Alliance.

Vickers grew up in Huntsville and Tuscaloosa. He earned his undergraduate and medical degrees at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, and remained there for his residency in pancreatic cancer surgery. He then undertook fellowships with the National Institutes of Health and the John Radcliffe Hospital of Oxford University. He joined the faculty at UAB in 1994 and conducted research funded by the National Institutes of Health on cancer health disparities research. He was a senior scientist at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center and an associate scientist at the UAB Gene Therapy Center. He served as the John Blue Professor of Surgery and chair of the UAB Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery from 2000 to 2006, then left to accept the position of Jay Phillips professor and chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Minnesota Medical School.

In 2013 Vickers returned to UAB to succeed interim medical school dean Anupam Agarwal. In 2021 he served a 1-year term as president of the American Surgical Association. In June 2022 he announced that he would leave UAB to succeed Craig Thompson as president and CEO of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.
