Shades Creek Waste Water Treatment Plant

The Shades Creek Waste Water Treatment Plant is located at 1331 Oak Grove Road South in Homewood. The facility serves the communities of Irondale, portions of Birmingham, Mountain Brook, and Homewood, through which Shades Creek flows. Since 1987, sewage entering this plant has been transferred to the facility at Valley Creek for further treatment.

Initial sewer lines were laid in the 1930's from Edgewood Lake to subdivisions upstream. The first buildings were constructed at the Shades Creek facility in 1934. By the late 1950's, the original 1934 plant had become hydraulically overloaded and stormwater infiltrated the sewer pipes feeding the facility, resulting in sewage bypassing the plant. A new plant opened in 1960 at the same site to provide additional capacity.
