The Shades Valley Family YMCA is a branch facility of the YMCA of Greater Birmingham located at 3551 Independence Drive in Homewood.
Shades Valley was one of the early branches of the Birmingham YMCA, opening in 1962.
In 2009, a "Renew Our Home" fundraising campaign began, raising $2 million over three years. The $5.5 million renovation project then broke ground in March 2012. It included a 4,000-square-foot addition containing a new lobby, workout areas, and teen technology center; new locker rooms; a new pool; and a 6,000-square foot airnasium (a gym with open sides). The building remained open during the renovations, which were unveiled in October, but the official ribbon-cutting ceremony was not held until January 24, 2013.
